Meet the founder

Bogdan Vujnovic

Bogdan founded Weldon Brewery in 2014 with one simple aim: brew bold, full-flavoured beers and never cut corners to get there. He started small, on a two-barrel plant at the Shoulder of Mutton, learning the craft one batch at a time.

In 2016 he moved up to the 3.5-barrel kit from the former Copper Kettle brewery in Rushden, and the brewery took the name of the village it calls home. That same year his Stahlstadt was crowned CAMRA Champion Beer of Northamptonshire in the Speciality category.

Today Bogdan still brews in a historic farm building in Weldon, using malt from England and Belgium and hops from four continents. He cares as much about the history around the brewery as the beer itself, and no beer shows that better than Rosie's Sweat Box.

A beer with a story

Rosie's Sweat Box

There was huge excitement at the brewery one morning when we received a parcel all the way from Pegg Rozzell in America. Pegg is the daughter of airman Grady Rozzell, nicknamed Rosie, who was the first pilot of Rosie's Sweat Box. One of our first and best-known beers is named after this locally well-known plane, which sadly crashed on 17 September 1944 on the road between Weldon and Deenethorpe.

None of the six brave crew survived. Grady Rozzell was not piloting that mission. He survived the war and later married, and Pegg is his daughter.

We were thrilled to make contact with Pegg, who generously sent us copies of Rosie's Sweat Box, written by her brother David, along with posters for the brewery wall, which we will frame and display with great pride. In turn, we sent Pegg some Rosie's Sweat Box labels, which will be exhibited in a special Grady Rozzell area of a local museum.

The story of Grady Rozzell's experiences, Rosie's Sweat Box, can be found on Amazon UK as a Kindle edition and on Amazon US in paperback. It is an amazing story and a fascinating chapter in Weldon's rich history.
